Quests

by Leslie Hyla Winton Noble

Music to send the imagination on an exciting journey of adventure.

A collection of easy-listening pieces written in the classical symphonic styles, by South African composer Leslie Hyla Winton Noble. High-quality electronic instrumentation. Ideal for road trips, or during meditation / prayer.

Each of the albums is an attempt to express, in ‘classical’ music, what the composer’s fantasy novels are aimed at doing – following an adventure with a quest at the root of it. The Holy Grail, or whatever other subject, may not necessarily be found. That is of lesser importance. The adventures encountered in the attempt are what the story, or music, is all about.

Quests 1

This first selection uses the composer's favourite combination of instruments – piano and violin. Two adventures are set out in the first two full sonatas. Then three nocturnes follow, each of which may be regarded as a night-time interlude within a Quest.

    Quests 2

This album continues with the theme of using ‘classical’ music to carry the listener through an adventure on the lines of Quest fantasies, such as are found in tales like those of King Arthur or some of the Greek legends, and which continue with writers like Tolkien. This time, the medium is solo piano, and three full piano sonatas take the imaginative listener through a gamut of different experiences. Though featuring some unusual elements, the music largely retains conventional sonata form, and remains melodic.

    Quests 3

The composer’s fourth piano sonata opens the Quest adventures in ‘classical’ music continued in this album. Four full movements give a 30-minute journey through many different situations.

Then comes a trio with the addition of an alto recorder to the violin/piano combination which was found in the first album. This excursion is given a different dimension by the high purity of sound unique to the recorder.

Finally, all the stops are pulled out when the next Quest makes use of a full orchestra, including a harp in the second movement.

    Quests 4

This adventure has the addition of four shorter pieces, three of which are actually featured in the composer’s fantasy novels. One of them actually has a key role.

The main section, though, is taken up first with another journey using solo piano in a three-movement sonata, and then with another full symphonic treatment.

The first movement of the latter is dark and brooding, but those to follow become increasingly light in content until the third movement runs straight into a lively waltz as a triumphal ending to this quest.
